Not the best day at the office, but we got through

The IX Europe Reading Kangaroos fielded a side missing several regulars this week, and only managed to secure a win against a battling Swindon side in the 4th quarter. The magnificent final 20 minute performance was redemption for a decidedly shakey first half, when the Roos struggled to put together many consistent passages of play.
With the league coming donw to the last few games and the Scorpions really having to slip up to lose top spot, all points and goals matter as the teams vie for the two play-off places.

With a strong wind blowing down the pitch, the Roos looked off colour for much of the first half, putting together sporadic periods of good play in amongst some disappointing misses, slips of attention and sheer bad luck in a couple of cases. The Devils battled hard and found space a little too often for the Roos liking, and with a prominent target man up top might have enjoyed more success against an often outnumbered Roos back line. In the blazing sun and with no EU replacements, it was always going to be tough for the Roos centre, but Zac, Ian, Oli, Paul and Joao had a lot of running to do and were forced to track back a lot more than the team will want.
At the back, Tristan, Mike and Ads coped well with a much busier game than they've been used to this year, but could not prevent fairly regular goals by the Swindon forwards throughout the first half. Mike attacked the ball well, as many dropped short in front of his man, and Tristan had another one of those games, wherever the ball came down, he seemed to be there collecting and clearing.

Up top, the team welcomed back Phil after a 3 game absence and he definitely helped steady some of the wayward shooting that dominated the first half. The Roos will be disappointed in particular in the failure to get more goals than behinds - a major focus of training, but only narrowly missed the mark. After some shooting he'll definitely want to forget, Brent also got into the action alter in the game a slotted a few goals to keep the top scorers race tight. Ted, Ben had solid games at the front end and Munch performed well in his first full game of the season, taking some good grabs and beating his man more often than not before offloading.
|
A fiery half time talk did seem to get the team more focussed on the job in hand, and the lads came out much better in the second half. Again against the wind, the lads put together far better possession and retained the ball well throughout, and looked a totally different team to the first half, managing to keep Swindon pegged back even against the wind. Despite being let down by some drops and slips, the lads did much better and started to stamp a bit more authority on the game.

In the fourth quarter, the Roos grabbed the game and killed it off. Going with the wind and with the Devils starting to look tired, the boys put together much more of the play that has seen them dominate the majority of their games. With a 20 goal finishing target, the play from the middle of the park was magnificent, leading to many more, and cleaner scoring opportunities. Ads made a few trademark charges and actually got close a couple of times before the legendary Bennett shooting came into play. One move saw a tap down from Oli, a swift handball from Zac and a turn and shot from Brent, giving the Roos what must be one of the fastest goals from restart ever! Tristan popped up at full forward to double his goal tally for the season, and Oli looked like he was really enjoying himself, holding a central role and picking off many Devils balls out.

In hindsight, the performance was rescued by a magnificent 4th quarter, with controlling, determined play throughout, even after losing Ian to an recurring injury. The team really need to work on getting focussed from the off if they want to progress this season and with the aspirations to move back to the London league in the long-term. In the end, a match to learn some lessons from, but one where the determination saw the lads through in the end
