Roos continue the winning start

by Adam Bennett

The Roos continued their winning start to the season this Saturday with a commanding win over new league entries, the Manchester Mosquitoes. Building a commanding lead in the first quarter, the Roos once again demonstrated great improvement to their all-round game, with good linking play, ball protection and strong shepherding.

The first quarter started well, with quick goals on the board from Phil and Andy. The Roo's pitch is has lots of space to play with, and the forward line were using this to their advantage to make good leads and grabs. The middle of the park was a well-contested area, with the more experienced Roos centre picking up the majority of the ball and hitting good approach balls to the forwards.

After a top performance against Thanet, the Roos were unlucky to lose GB Rover Ian Gladman to a hamstring injury, which it's hoped he'll be quick to recover from. Jules dominated the ruck all game long and it's a testament to the Roos EUs strength that so many key positions are played, not by Australians, but by local lads. This should particularly pay dividends at June's Brit Cup.

Ads and Mike at the back were having another quiet game, as anything that the Centres didn't cut out, very rarely got past the Roos own Great Wall of Reading - Tristan and Nackers. A slight lapse of attention in the third quarter allowed the Mosquitoes to lose their markers and put some goals on the board, but a stern third quarter chat got the team focused again and inspired a final quarter shut-out.

Outstanding performances of the day were mainly in the busy areas in the Roos forward line. With Phil setting up more play that scoring himself, it was left to Ted and Andy Whits to notch up good tallies, with 11 goals between them. Crox got into the act with 4 well-taken strikes of his own, but the eye-catchers were coming out of the Roos centre. Andy Craig was in true wrecking ball style all game (it's great not to have to play against him!) and took chances well to slot 3 goals. The debut performance from Evan Spears was a fantastic one, taking 2 goals, covering runs forward and always making ground from his grabs. The Roos will be hoping to tempt him onto the pitch a lot more this season.

At the end of the game, the Roos could look back on a good performance, with great contributions all over the park. Their play continues to improve, and with some serious tests coming up against the experienced regional sides, this can only be encouraging. Full credit to the Mosquitoes, who battled hard all game and played well with the ball in their possession. The teams could then relax and retire to the Reading Walkabout for some much deserved relaxation whilst watching the FA Cup.
