6th May, 2006
Season opens with a good win

by Adam Bennett

The first weekend of the new Regional league season saw the Roos travelling down to new club, Thanet Bombardiers. Based about as far East as it's possible to get in the UK and not be swimming, the lads from Thanet have joined up with the Roos on two previous occasions, but now find themselves on the other side of the pitch.

Based on the Thanet player availability, the match was played with 10 players on each side, and the space told in the first quarter, with the Roos forward line able to make good leads and grabs, to set up a number of early goals. Phil particularly was enjoying the return to the game, after a relatively quiet 2005 season, and contributed several goals to the Roos first quarter lead. Crox also managed to avoid the famous 'Barnard Elbow' to register some scores of his own.

Andy and Zac were cutting out most of the Thanet balls up front, so Ads and Mike had a quiet quarter, seeing the ball only a handful of times, which were comfortably dispatched down the far end. Jules continued in his regular vein, looking comfortable on the ball at all times, even against the Thanet ruckman, who despite being in his first game, was already proving adept in the air.

The second quarter continued at the same pace, with Andy, Ian and Oli now dominating the centre of the park, cutting out almost all attacking ball and distributing well up the field, even slotting some goals of their own (along with several singles).

One thing the Roos needed to work on from last season was the shepherding and protection of their ball carriers, and the lads were certainly showing some benefits from the drills Joao had been putting them through in training. Phil continued his rampage up front, and already looks like he'll need to be relegated to Full Back for anyone else to stand a chance of getting top scorer this season.

With the score ramping up, the Roos made the age old error of easing off the gas, and were punished by 4 quick and well-taken snap goals from broken play. Joe 'Injury Magnet' Rixon and Johnson in the Thanet middle managing to capitalise on some sloppy marking after ball-ups. This was enough to wake the Roos up again, and the centre line once again started to dominate.

Jules, suffering slightly with his calf, was installed up front and managed to take some good grabs and goals, even managing to avoid his trademark random-bounce efforts which were a regular fixture in the Premiership last year. Sam was having a frustrating time, as the ball refused to sit up for him, nor present itself with any sort of predictability. He did get rewarded for his persistence and good positional play later on though.

Oli and Nackers dominate the middle.

The final quarter saw a triumphant return for the Roo's coach, Joao 'Koala' Coelho. Suffering with a knee injury for the past year, he managed to find space and slot a couple of behinds to open his account for the year. With no subs at their disposal and cramp and knocks beginning to show, the Thanet lads battled well, but had no gas left to repeat their third quarter scoring run. the final whistle blew and some tired legs were allowed to rest.
